The main holiday periods in the Philippines are determined by the Christian calendar. Thus many businesses will close for the entire week before Easter which is called ‘Holy Week’ and most, if not all, Filipinos will also take time off over the Christmas period. In some parts of the Philippines holidays follow the Islamic festivals but this is mainly in the southern island of Mindanao.

Throughout the year each city, and district, has at least one local festival of its own, usually on the feast of its patron saint, so that at any given time there is usually a fiesta going on somewhere in the country. The biggest and most elaborate festival of all is Christmas but below we have listed some of the other most important festivals in the Filipino calendar.
