It is only in recent years that Dawei been connected to the rest of Myanmar by road, rail and air. As a result the town feels like something from a bygone era with its charming old wooden houses, complete with shady verandas, and its laid back feel. Visitors can enjoy its colourful markets (one in town, and one by the river) as well as nearby sights such as Shwe Taung Sar Pagoda, Shwe Tharlyaung Reclining Buddha and Sapar Taung - a hill which affords great views of the town and the surrounding countryside. Dawei is also wonderfully close to the coast and there are a couple of nice, undeveloped beaches nearby - such as Maungmadan Beach, which offer a chance to sample delicious seafood.

Unfortunately this fascinating, and historic, town is soon to become part of Myanmar's fastest developing region thanks to the construction of the ‘Dawei Deep-Sea Port' and a special economic zone promoted by both Myanmar and Thailand. For the time being Dawei slumbers merrily away but a rude awakening lies just around the corner.
