Hidden away in the forest near the small town of Anamaduwa, is the rustic and romantic Mudhouse. This eco-retreat offers interesting and uniquely designed hut style accommodation spread throughout 60 acres of peaceful forest. Each hut is constructed from natural materials and blends in with the surrounding woodland, each has a slightly different layout but all are essentially the same. All have outdoor showers, with an indoor lavatory and sink and a comfortable mattress on a raised bed with a mosquito net and there are huts of differing size available, depending on how many of you are travelling together and all meals are included during your stay, as are any excursions you might feel like undertaking. There are two lakes in the grounds where guests can bathe, swim or kayak and some great nature walks in the local area, whilst day trips can be arranged further afield, including to the Wilpattu National Park. A stay at the Mudhouse is a unique experience which many feel is one of the highlights of their trip, but those looking for creature comforts such as air-conditioning and hot water, be warned, it is not what this place is about. If you like to drink alcohol, you are welcome to bring your own, but there is usually none available to purchase at the Mudhouse itself.
