Northeast India in Depth (16 days)

The eclectic, energetic Bengali capital Kolkata is your jumping-off point for a 16-day adventure which comprehensively explores the steamy lowlands of Assam and scenic highlands of West Bengal and Sikkim. After two nights in Kolkata, you will fly across to Jorhat and then cross by ferry to Majuli, the largest river island in the world, home to a fascinating and largely untouched ethnic culture. From here it’s on to Kaziranga National Park, sanctuary of the Great One-Horned Rhino, before continuing to Guwahati, the biggest and busiest city in Assam. The picture then changes completely as you fly up into the Himalayan foothills, exploring Tibetan rustic highland culture from a secluded farm stay in Kalimpong, before diving in to the Tibetan influences on Gangtok. Your final stop is Darjeeling, among the most renowned of Raj-era hill stations, famous for its tea and its dramatic toy train route up to Ghoom. This is a fairly busy itinerary which covers a variety of different locations, and could easily be tailored out to an adventure of three weeks or more if you wish to explore the region in greater depth.
