Dharamsala is India by location, but Tibet in practice: home to the Tibetan government in exile, and spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism, the Dalai Lama. The town rose to international prominence in 1959 when the Tibetan Government, forced from Lhasa by Chinese annexation, were granted permission by Prime Minister Nehru to settle in Upper Dharamsala (also known as McLeod Ganj). As you would expect, the town is now absolutely synonymous with Tibet and Tibetan Buddhism. Many travel here to worship in its temples or study in its monasteries, often staying for weeks or months at a time.
