Biei is a small town in the heart of Hokkaido surrounded by beautiful rolling countryside. During the summer many varieties of flowers are in full bloom but it is the lavender that is most striking and what the area is famed for. Whist driving or cycling around the countryside it feels more like Provence than Japan and a world away from the bright lights of Tokyo.

Biei is a perfect place to relax and have some downtime. As well was taking a walk through the fields there are some small museums and galleries to visit including Takushinkan which exhibits photos taken by Maeda Shinzo of many parts of Japan but concentrating on Biei and the surrounding area. His photos of Biei are so famous you may well have seen them on billboards in other parts of Japan before arriving meaning the area has a very familiar feel!
