Luggage Forwarding
The Japanese seldom travel with burdensome luggage unless they are driving to their destination. Adopting the Japanese concept of luggage forwarding is a no-brainer as it takes the stress out of travelling and makes a ride on the bullet train far more enjoyable.

Japan’s luggage forwarding service, known as ‘Takuhaibin’  宅配便 – is very efficient and easy to use. It comes especially in handy when travelling by train between cities or enjoying one of Japan’s excellent multi-day walks. One large suitcase of up to 25kg can be sent from one hotel onto a following hotel (or between any two addresses in the country), with guaranteed next day delivery for just under 2000 yen ($20 / £14), with smaller or lighter bags costing less. For forwarding to / from Hokkaido (Japan’s north island) or Okinawa (the southern islands) please allow two days for delivery. The service includes insurance for your luggage up to a maximum value of up to 300,000 yen (approx. £2,000 / US$2,900) but cash, valuable documents and credit/debit cards are not included in the cover. We highly recommend you make use of this system during your trip to make travelling between destinations more pleasant and allow you to sit back and enjoy the rolling countryside of Japan without the headache of your luggage.

Please note that hotel front desks tend to be busy in the morning, so we suggest that you ask staff to assist you with luggage forwarding the previous evening. This is particularly useful if you have an early start. Note that some very small or isolated hotels may not offer luggage-forwarding, in which case you can take your bags to the nearest convenience store and use the service from there.
