Sinharaja is Sri Lanka’s best preserved area of rainforest and a fantastic area for bird-watching. The reserve has been protected as a Unesco World Heritage site since 1988, and as a result has escaped commercial logging. Under such favourable conditions, its biodiversity has flourished. Larger mammals are rarely seen, but there are plenty of birds, and more species of tree per square metre than on any other spot on the planet. Roads to and from the forest reserve are rough, but the once arrived the excursions and bird-watching make it well worth the effort to get here. We recommend at least a couple of nights in order to explore this fabulously unspoilt rainforest to its full extent.
