Highlights of Central Bhutan
The central part of Bhutan is a must for those wishing to explore the country in depth. As you climb over the passes that lead away from the west (or east) you will enter a land of deep valleys, formidable dzongs, ancient monasteries, and some of the most scenic landscapes that the country has to offer. The vitally important dzong at Trongsa marks the entrance point to this region and from here access to the four valleys of Bumthang can be achieved. To many people Bumthang is the spiritual heartland of Bhutan, with its legendary monasteries, temples and palaces. Bumthang is the collective name for an area of 4 valleys - Chokhor, Tang, Ura and Chhume - all of which possess stunning scenery and preserve a traditional way of life.
The small town of Trongsa can be found right in the heart of Bhutan. Its central location, surrounded by mountains, and set at the top of the gorge, has given it an unrivalled strategic position. It is little wonder then that one of the country's most important dzongs can be found at Trongsa.
