Abai Jungle Lodge

The Abai Jungle Lodge is situated on Borneo's famous Kinabatangan River in a convenient location around an hours’ boat journey from Sandakan and a similar time from Sukau, a larger village further up the river. Abai is only reachable by boat and as there are no other lodges nearby it is considered one of the best places in Borneo to see wildlife. The lodge is one of the newest on the river and, although fairly basic, it is well maintained, clean and comfortable. There are 30 stilted wooden chalets which are divided in to small blocks of two or three, all with en suite bathrooms, fans and hot water showers. There is a small bar and simple restaurant serving good local food, one of the specialities being fresh river prawns from the Kinabatangan. Depending on how busy the lodge is, there may be either a buffet choice or set menu for meals.

Behind the lodge there is a wooden jungle trail that you can visit on your own to try and see some of the abundant wildlife in the surrounding jungle. Guests can also take a boat over to the other side of the river and meet the locals in Abai village, a small jungle community with its own school and a worthwhile tree planting project.

All meals are included at the lodge and excursions are shared with other guests. If you would rather private tours in your own private boat on the Kinabatangan River, please ask your consultant to quote the supplement.

Our Opinion

One of the most comfortable lodges on the Kinabatangan River and certainly the most isolated, making it a great spot for wildlife viewings. One of the Bamboo team had his delicious al-fresco breakfast interupted when a wild orangutan swung through the resort!
