The Nor Khill was built for the Chogyal (King) of Sikkim in 1932, and served as a royal guesthouse. Translating as 'house of jewels', it is located in the heart of Gangtok city, set amongst picturesque gardens, and has stunning views across the valley.  Now operated by Elgin hotels, it is a snug and cosy hotel which has been thoroughly modernised without losing any of its original grandeur. There are 25 well-equipped rooms, plus a well-stocked library, games room and onsite restaurant. The property is a short walk to the busiest areas of Gangtok, and also a good base for nature walks in the surrounding hills.
