The Yamakyu is a traditional ryokan just 15 minutes’ walk from the station in Takayama. The guestrooms are simple and in the traditional style, with tatami mat floors and futon beds and an ensuite toilet and sink, but bathing takes place in the shared Japanese bath – with separate areas for ladies and for gents. Staff at the Yamakyu are very friendly and speak some English and the food here is excellent.
