Sary-Chelek Nature Reserve

The Sary-Chelek Nature Reserve was recognised by UNESCO as a Protected Biosphere Reserve in 1978. The reserve is made up of seven alpine lakes, with Sary-Chelek Lake being the largest. This is widely considered by the Kyrgyz people as one of the most beautiful areas in the country. It’s a long journey from the capital city so most travellers never get this far unless they have the time for an in-depth overland tour of the country. It’s well worth the effort to get this far, as you will be rewarded with some truly epic scenery. The Reserve is a rich habitat for thousands of plant species, as well as a great number of birds and mammals. The main activity here is hiking, with designated trails connecting most of the seven lakes.
