Kanpetlet is a small mountainside village in Chin State, set on a mountain ridge with deep valleys on both sides, and some 5 hours' drive from Bagan. It is many people's first taste of the remote lifestyle of the Chin people and a staging post for those who are keen to reach the summit of Mount Victoria. Surrounding Kanpetlet there are other small villages which are home to a dying breed - the tattooed lady, many of whom are in their 70s or 80s, and have differing facial tattooes subject to which tribe they are from. Life in the Chin Mountains can be tough and many locals rely on subsistance farming as a means of survival. A nice time to visit this part of Chin State is between late January and early March when the weather is good and the mountains are full of crops and birds.
