Mrauk-U was the capital of one of Burma’s most important kingdom’s and as such is a significant archaeological site. There are around 70 ruined temples and stupas here that were built in the 15th & 16th centuries in a range of different shapes and designs. If you are keen on archaeology you will definitely want to visit Mrauk-U!
Getting to Sittwe and Mrauk U is definitely an adventure and usually involves a four or five day excursion from Yangon. There are flights from Yangon to Sittwe but from there you will need to take a six hour boat ride to reach Mrauk U.
Sightseeing in Mrauk U usually includes a visit to the Archaeological Museum and the palace site which dates back to the 16th century. You will also visit the maze-like Shittaung Temple, a shrine of 80,000 Buddha images, and the adjacent Andaw Thein Ordination Hall and Htukkan Thein Temple. On your second day you can drive to Vesali – the royal city (2.7 square miles) which was developed by King Mahataing Chandra during the Vesali Dynasty and which is said to have lasted until the 8th century.
From Mrauk U it is also possible to visit Kreik Chaung Village where you will have a chance to witness the virtually unchanged lifestyle and customs of the local Laytoo Chin minority and their heavily tattooed women.
