Descending into Legaspi is one of the most dramatic flight arrivals imaginable. The city is arranged around a gently-curving bay, overshadowed and dominated by the enormous Mayon volcano. Mayon, still active, is dubbed 'the world's most perfect volcano', with near-symmetrical slopes and standing in complete contrast to the flat plains which surround. Although a pleasant and interesting city in its' own right, most will use Legaspi as the gateway to Donsol, a drive of around an hour straight across the southern peninsula of Luzon. Donsol is famed for one thing and one thing alone: swimming with whalesharks. It is the only region of the Philippines in which this is possible, so something of a must for divers looking for one of the ultimate under-water experiences.
