The city of Yeosu lies on the rugged southern coast of South Korea, an incredibly scenic area of spectacular cliffs, islands, and peninsulas. The city is best known for its connection with Admiral Yi Sun-shin, a national hero in both North and South Korea. Yi Sun-shin defeated Japanese invaders in a succession of naval battles on the waters off the southern coast in the 1590s with the use of his revolutionary turtle ships (Geobukseon). A statue of the great admiral can be found in Yi Sun Shin Square along with a replica of a turtle ship open to the public.
