Hallasan & The Interior

The 1950m tall dormant volcano of Hallasan rises up in almost the dead centre of Jeju, with the rest of the island falling down to coast on every side. As both the geographical and spiritual centre, the mountain is something of a must-see for all visitors. Hiking trails run all around the 60sq mile national park, itself an active ecosystem housing several thousand species of plant and animal – small roe deer being are a regular sighting. Hallasan, along with Jirisan and Seoraksan on the mainland, is thought of as one of the three holiest mountains in Korea; it also goes by the secondary title Mt. Yeongjusan which translates, somewhat dramatically, as “mountain high enough to pull the galaxy”. High praise indeed!
