One of Tibet's four holy lakes, Yamdrok-tso is a nature lover's paradise located around 2 hours' drive from Lhasa on the spectacular Southern Friendship Highway to Gyantse. The body of water is in the shape of an Ox Bow Lake, with 7000m snow-capped mountains towering over the southern shores. From the high mountain pass on the approach road from Lhasa the waters appear a serene turquoise colour, which is a great viewpoint and shooting area for photographers. If you have time to stop and wander along the shore you will be rewarded with a close up of the crystal clear waters teaming with fish, and the chance to spot a variety of water fowl.
