Xidi, Bishan & Hongcun - Anhui Province

The area around Huangshan is home to a number of well-preserved ancient villages. Xidi & Hongcun are both UNESCO recognised heritage sites, both with a history spanning over 900 years. Located 54km to the south of Mount Huangshan and 40km from the city of Tunxi city, Xidi and Hongcun are a traditional villages surrounded by wonderful scenery of lush paddy fields. In the year 2000 both were declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites to protect the historic buildings dating from China’s feudal era in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Hongcun also gained fame as the background for several scenes in Ang Lee's famous film 'Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon'. Nearby Bishan is perhaps less famous, but retains an air of authenticity and is a pleasant place to get away from it all and enjoy the countryside.
