Naypyidaw is arguably the world’s most bizarre capital city; while we can’t promise the most enchanting or exciting stop of your Myanmar itinerary, this could be one of the most memorable. Naypyidaw’s ‘charms’ are well documented – enormous 10-lane highways without a vehicle in sight, sprawling Governmental complexes seemingly inhabited by no-one, and an array of Orwellian statues and monuments dedicated to this god, or that general, or both. With direct international flights from both Bangkok and Hong Kong Naypyidaw can make an unusual introduction to Myanmar at the very beginning of your tour, or an other-wordly experience if placed somewhere in the middle. Use your insights to imagine what North Korea might look like, or enhance your experience of greater Myanmar by comparison. It may not be a romantic, picture-postcard experience, but it will reward inquisitive minds looking to develop their understanding of Myanmar’s troubling past and present.  Accommodation in Naypyidaw is generally very good, with a host of brand-new hotels designed with coteries of diplomats in mind. As with the rest of the city, expect a curious, if charmless, stay.
