Gems and Generals (15 days)

This itinerary is definitely one for the curious. Showcasing areas not likely to be on everybody's ‘highlights' list, this tour is designed for those looking to explore regions only recently-opened to foreign visitors. Beginning in Myanmar's frankly bizarre new capital Naypyidaw, this tour takes you up through the cultural capital of Mandalay, then up the Burma Road to the colonial hill station of Pyin Oo Lwin and the rich trekking destination of Hsipaw. In between are two days spent in the newly-opened (to Western visitors) ruby-mining area of Mogok, where you can examine the gem trade from source as well as explore this relatively untouched area of rural Myanmar.
