Set in a magnificent valley in the Lamjung Himal region between Kathmandu and Pokhara, Ghale Gaun is an authentic Gurung village offering homestays and superb trekking. The village lies at a manageable altitude of 2,095m and offers superb views of the three Annapurna peaks and the closer Lamjung Himal. The local community has recently established a homestay program involving a network of over 100 traditional homes that have been adapted to provide a basic level of comfort. The aim is for visitors to learn about the culture and lifestyles of the local Gurung people through traditional dance and music performances, sampling local food and drink and interaction with their hosts. Being at the trailhead of the legendary Manang trekking route there are several hikes of varying length that can be done as day trips from Ghale Gaun, passing through landscapes of terraced farmland and river valleys overlooked by magnificent snow-capped peaks. These relatively short and easy routes are an ideal taster of Nepal's celebrated Himalayan treks.
