Highlights of Muscat & Surrounds
Muscat slips somewhat below the radar when compared to its glitzier neighbours in the UAE and Qatar, but the city and surrounding area has a laid-back charm, making it a great area to explore. The coastline and beaches all along the north coast are tremendous and day trips into the interior, be it to craggy mountains, ancient forts or wavy desert dunes, are rewarding.
Back to All Regions of OmanAl Mussanah is a peaceful town on the coast overlooking the Gulf of Oman, around 90km from Muscat. It has a quiet stretch of beach and is within easy touching distance of Barka, with its local fish market, Nakhal with its impressive fort as well as other sites of interest in the Batinah province.
Muscat is an alluring and atmospheric city, situated on the Gulf of Oman, with a trading heritage which goes back centuries. Its position in between Europe and Asia makes it a convenient stopover destination, with range of excellent upmarket hotels and plenty to see and do locally.
The small town of Nakhal, 90km southwest of Muscat, is home to one of Oman’s most picture-perfect forts and is well worth visiting if you are spending few days in Muscat or Al Mussanah.
