Around 40km west of Nizwa, the neighbouring towns of Bahla and Jabrin have two impressive forts which are well worth a visit. The Bahla Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has been painstakingly restored using traditional methods and was once home to the ruling Bani Nabhan Dynasty for whom Bahla served as the capital. Although built around a thousand years ago, there is still a well-preserved city wall around the town.
