Port Moresby
The capital of Papua New Guinea, Port Moresby is likely to be your entry point to PNG and your first taste of life here. Over the years the city has acquired a rather fearsome reputation, but is not as rough and ready as it is sometimes made out to be and in places is really rather pleasant. The city sprawls over several hills which look out over the Gulf of Papua and there are a decent range of attractions to services the needs of anyone staying for a day or two.
Visitors can find bargains at several colourful markets selling paintings, masks and other indigenous handicrafts. The Port Moresby Nature Park provides a chance to see birds of paradise and other exotic creatures. The National Parliament House and the National Museum & Art Gallery offer an insight into the local culture and there is even an active yacht club which makes a good place to have lunch.
