Most visitors to West New Britain are keen divers or those who enjoy learning more about Papua New Guinea’s involvement in the Second World War – as this half of New Britain is famous for both. Otherwise West New Britain is virtually untouched by tourism, unexplored and little known other than for its volcanic landscapes and, rather dubiously, as being the chief producer of palm oil in Papua New Guinea. The capital of Kimbe is home to the Walindi Plantation Resort – the best known accommodation in the province and popular with divers from around the globe. Apart from the diving West Britain offers some excellent fishing and some scenic trekking in the Cape Gloucester area where the volcano Mount Langila makes an exciting backdrop to any walk.
