Karawari River
The Karawari River is a tributary of the mighty Sepik River and perhaps most famous as being home to the Karawari Lodge which provides luxurious accommodation, and the only modern infrastructure, in an otherwise primitive rural setting. There are no roads in this part of the country and the only way in and out is by small plane or local dugout canoe. The scenic waterways of this part of the Sepik region are home to a variety of stilted villages whose inhabitants live off the land or otherwise by producing goods which can be sold, or bartered, in nearby villages. A visit to the Karawari River affords visitors a truly unique experience and offers a fascinating insight into the lives of local tribal people.
As well as staying at the lodge, the Karawari can also be explored on the 'Sepik Spirit' - a luxury river cruise boat that offers 3 or 4 day tours to see the Karawari River, its villages, wildlife and inhabitants.
