Wewak is the capital of East Sepik Province and for most visitors is either the gateway to adventures in the Sepik Region, or a welcoming place to recover at having spent a few days ‘roughing it’ along the Sepik River. Once home to a large Japanese airbase, this charming coastal town has a number of memorials and even a Japanese Memorial Peace Park which commemorate the town’s involvement in the Second World War.
The town is also home to several markets and craft shops where you can pick up masks and other handicrafts from the Sepik Region. Often overlooked at a destination in its own right, Wewak also has a number of scenic beaches, and headlands, which offer great snorkelling.
