The ‘Escape to Sri Lanka’ itinerary makes for a simple yet enjoyable holiday, with direct flights and just two hotels, keeping the hassle of travelling and un-packing / packing to a minimum. Start with six nights at the Why House, a delightful boutique hotel just 15 minutes from Galle and five minutes to several attractive beaches. Using Why House as your base, embark on a series of mini-adventures in the Galle area, including exploring the fort in a vintage Mini Moke, Hiking in the impressive Kanneliya Rainforest, a private cookery class with a local family and a visit to a local tea plantation and factory. From here, head to Mirissa, where you will have a rare opportunity to see whales and dolphins in the ocean from your own private boat, before finishing your holiday with five nights in a luxurious villa on a secluded beach close to the sleepy town of Tangalle. Without question, you will return home refreshed and rejuvenated!

Flight: UL504 London Heathrow - Colombo 21.15 - 13.20 (overnight)
Road journey to Galle: On arrival in Colombo you will be welcomed to Sri Lanka by your private driver and transferred to your hotel near Galle. This is a journey of approximately 3 hours. On arrival, check-in and relax for the rest of the day.

Explore Galle in a Mini Moke: Today you will ioin Mervin, one of Bamboo Travel's best driver-guides on a tour of his home city, Galle, in his very own refurbished Mini Moke. Mervin and his friend have adoringly restored this characterful classic British car to its former glory and love nothing more than showing Bamboo Travel clients the sights of Galle in it. With a knowledgeable local as your guide, you’ll get under the skin of this famous city and discover hidden secrets of the fort, eccentric locals and some fantastic places to eat and drink.

Explore the Kanneliya Rainforest: Just 35km from Galle, you’ll find the impressive rainforest at Kanneliya, a fantastic place to explore with an experienced local wildlife tracker. Leave your hotel early and meet the tracker at the Kanneliya Forest Reserve entrance before undertaking an exciting morning walk amongst the thick tropical trees where a multitude of wildlife and birds can be spotted. You can stop for a rest at a local waterfall and then finish the walk with a delicious local lunch at your guides home, freshly cooked by his family. Return to your hotel in the mid-afternoon and put your feet-up or enjoy a well-earned swim in the pool.

Morning guided cycling tour: This morning you will be met at your hotel and transferred to the starting point for your morning bicycle tour. The trail that you will be following today is called the ‘Paddy & Lake Trail’ and is with a local guide from a company called ‘Idle Bikes’ who are based in Galle. The trail is approximately 30km and includes a beautiful section cycling alongside the North West shoreline of Koggala Lake. The ride will last for approximately 2-3 hours and is suitable for keen and regular cyclists with a decent level of fitness.

Morning Biryani cookery class: Galle was once an important trading hub for Arab merchants and with them came many dishes, perhaps most quintessential is Biryani. Often served at Muslim family celebrations and festivities, Biryani comprises side dishes such as raita, cashew curry, Malay pickle, curried peas and meats and other spiced vegetables that accompany flavoured rice. Today’s lesson is private and will take place in the kitchen of your friendly host, lasting for around three hours. After making your very own Galle style Biryani, sit down and enjoy it with your host and her family for lunch.
Afternoon tea plantation tour: This afternoon you will be taken to visit one of the lesser known tea estates in the rolling hills to the north of Galle. On arrival, you will be shown around by your host and learn about the intricacies of growing tea in the south of Sri Lanka. As well as tea, you will see lemongrass and jackfruit growing and you are likely to see brightly clad pickers and even a few peacocks as you walk around the estate. At the end of your tour, enjoy a cup of tea before returning to your hotel for the evening at leisure.

Road journey to Tangalle with whale watching en route: Check out of your hotel, early this morning and head off to Mirissa with your driver. Mirissa is about 45 minutes away and on arrival, you will be taken on a private whale watching tour. The tour will take place in an exclusive private speedboat, giving you the opportunity to enjoy your trip in comfort and away from the hustle and bustle of the overcrowded public boats. The boats are fast and can take you to the shipping lanes (where the whales and dolphins are) in about half an hour. Along the way you’ll see other marine life; sea turtles, flying fish, pods of spinner dolphins and much more. In good weather, you may probably be the first boat at the whales and the first boat back at shore. On arrival back in Mirissa in the late morning, you will meet up with your driver again and, after an opportunity to have lunch at a local restaurant (payable locally), you will be transferred east, along the coast, to your small hotel near Tangalle to check-in and relax.

Road journey to Colombo Airport: Depart after an early breakfast this morning on the new highway north to Colombo airport. Depending on traffic conditions, this is a journey of around 4 hours.
