Lanzhou - Gansu Province

The capital and the largest city in Gansu province, Lanzhou was an important stop on the ancient Silk Road. Now a modern Chinese city situated alongside the Yellow River, Lanzhou provides a good jumping off point to explore the wild reaches of Western China, from the geological landforms of Zhangye to the desert beyond, and onwards as you follow in the footsteps of the ancient Silk Road. The city is home to a large Muslim population, and Lanzhou cuisine is famous throughout China, heavily influenced by the Muslim and Tibetan populations of Western China.
