Jebel Shams

Sometimes referred to as the Grand Canyon of Oman for its dramatic landscape, the Jebel Shams region has some breath-taking scenery and is home to the highest mountain in Oman (Jebel Shams). There are fewer villages than you’ll find around Jebel Akhdar but there are some delightful mountain hikes, with the spectacular three hour ‘Balcony Walk’ being perhaps the most famous in Oman following winding cliff paths around Wadi Nakhr and through the abandoned village of As Sab. There are also longer hikes which take you all the way to the summit of Jebel Shams, which, despite there being a road, is off limits to cars due to military use.
