It is impossible not to be charmed by the luxurious Ulagalla, set in 58 acres of irresistible eco-opulence approximately 30km south of Anuradhapura. The old ‘Wallawwa' (meaning traditional house) has been made into the reception area, bar and fine-dining restaurant, with a large outdoor pool and spa and beyond that, scattered strategically around the grounds, are 20 splendid villas. Each villa is very private and designed to sleep two (although can be three adults or a family of four) and has a bedroom, spacious bathroom and attractive living area and outside each has their own private plunge pool. The Resort has a strong focus on protecting the environment and produces all its own organic vegetables and rice and their own picturesque rice paddies are the centre piece of the property, dividing the villas from the main house. Although there are a fleet of golf carts which can be called on to pick you up at any time, guests are encouraged to use the bicycles provided at their villa to explore the grounds independently. Other points of interest, aside from the rice paddies and organic gardens, include a large solar farm (the largest in the country) - this is where much of the electricity used by the resort is generated - and horse stables. Outside the grounds, there are 3 neighbouring lakes and a ride (horse or bike) along one of pleasant bridle paths is a lovely late-afternoon activity. The Resort can arrange a number of other activities, including horse-riding, archery and nature walks.
