In 1521 Ferdinand Magellan arrived in Cebu and first set foot in the Philippines. Even before the Spaniards came, trade with the Chinese already flourished in the province and prosperity has continued since. Today Cebu City, known as the Queen City of the South, has become a thriving, highly urbanized centre, with its own international airport, that comes second only to Manila’s bustling metropolis. However only a short drive away from the city are numerous white sand beaches, crystal blue waters, and swaying palms, making Cebu a perfect destination for a stop off. Just off the coast of Cebu lies Mactan Island which is famous for its resort hotels whilst just off the southwest tip of Cebu you can find Sumilon Island which is the perfect place to get away from it all.
