Stay at a Buddhist Temple
South Korea’s temple stay program is a unique cultural program which lets you experience the life of Buddhist monks and nuns at traditional temples. Most temple stays are run on a shared basis and last for two days including an overnight stay.
An interest in Buddhist culture is preferable but total newcomers are welcome! The itinerary will include various ceremonial activities involving tea, drumming, meditation, and a pre-dawn chanting ceremony. A particular highlight is the simple monastic meals, created from ingredients grown or foraged locally, which are served during the program.
Participating in a temple stay is one of the best ways to travel back in time and discover Korea’s most ancient traditions. With dozens of working temples in the country it’s possible to include a temple stay on most itineraries to South Korea.
Those with an interest of overnighting in a temple should check out our Korean Temple Stay blog for more information.
