Nepal Adventure for Families (16 days)
Nepal is an outstanding family holiday destination, and this easy-paced tour is full of outdoor activities designed with both older children and teens in mind. The trip starts in the medieval city of Kathmandu, where you spend a day exploring the rabbit-warren of lanes and temples in the ancient district, try your hand at pottery in Bhaktapur and meet an Everest summiteer. Take a short flight to the laid-back town of Pokhara, your base to explore the surrounding countryside of lakes, caves and waterfalls. Next head to the Himalayas for an easy-going three-day trek in the Annapurna Conservation Area, hiking for a maximum of three hours per day to charming teahouses, with stunning views of some of earth’s tallest peaks. The scenery then changes dramatically as you drive south to the steamy jungles of Chitwan National Park, and spend two days searching for wildlife which include tigers, rhinos and crocodiles. Fly back to the Kathmandu Valley for a relaxing stay in a comfortable resort in the village of Nagarkot, and spend your final day descending by mountain bike through a lush valley to a UNESCO protected temple.

Your first visit will be Bhaktapur Durbar Square, in the east of the city, where you can see some of the best examples of Nepali craftsmanship in wood and stone. If the sun is shining life in Baktapur’s pottery square will be in full blaze, awash with a mix of small grey and brownish red clay pots. Every pot is examined by hand before being turned to face the sun at a new angle or dipped into a bucket of coloured water. Get your hands dirty with an interactive pottery workshop, where you will learn the craft from an expert potter and create a memento to take home.
After lunch in a local restaurant you will have the chance to sample a bowl of the local Bhaktapur delicacy called Juju Dhau, a sweetened custard-like yogurt that is an important component of all celebrations. Fresh buffalo milk is used to create Juju Dhau, for a rich taste and texture. The milk is boiled, sweetened, mixed with culture then poured into natural red clay pots which allow excess liquid to evaporate, leaving a delicious, thick, smooth and creamy yogurt. The product is then transported to Kathmandu’s local markets in the same clay pots.
Continue to the Pashupatinath Temple which is located on the western banks of the Bagmati River on the city’s northeastern side. This temple is one of the most important Hindu pilgrimage centres in the world and a sacred place for cremations. Finish your day with a visit to Boudhanath Stupa which claims to be the largest stupa in the world, and the holiest Tibetan Buddhist temple outside Tibet. This area of Kathmandu is the centre of Tibetan culture in Nepal, and rich in Buddhist symbolism.
