Treasures of Taiwan (14 days)
This two week tour takes you on a loop of this fascinating island to discover its many treasures. From the modern capital Taipei, head south with your private guide to explore the high mountains and deep gorges in the Taroko National Park. Drive along the spectacular Highway 11 to Chihpen, then on to the southernmost tip of the island and discover the rugged cliffs and tantalising beaches of the Kenting National Park. You will then start heading back north up the west coast, spending the night in the monastery guesthouse at the sacred Fo Guang Shan monastery, a night in Tainan to some of its famous temples and historical relics and then up to the hills for a night in Alishan, where you will have the chance to witness the breath-taking sunrise. The tour finishes in style with two days to relax on the shores of Sun Moon Lake, followed by a final night back in Taipei.

Full day tour of Taipei: After breakfast, you will be met at the hotel by your guide who will take you on a sightseeing tour of Taipei's main attractions. Start the tour with a visit to Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall, an imposing hall which is dedicated to the former president with a museum on the ground floor dedicated to Chiang's life and achievements. From there continue to visit the Lungshan Temple which dates back to the 17th century. In the same neighbourhood there is the impressive Taipei 101 tower, which until 2010 was the tallest building in the world. You will be taken up to the observatory on the 89th floor to take in the fantastic view of the city. This afternoon visit the Martyrs' shrine, dedicated to those who have lost their lives fighting for Taiwan. Watch the changing of the guards here before visiting the National Palace Museum, which has one of the world's largest collections of Chinese art. Finish your tour with a quick visit to Shilin Market, this is somewhere you may wish to head back to independently this evening to experience the local night life and do some shopping as it is in the evening that the market gets into full swing.

Full day tour of Yangmingshan National Park, Yehliu Geopark & Jiufen: A short car journey north of Taipei is the Yangmingshan National Park which has flora and fauna galore. Your guide this morning will show you around some of the parks highlights, including the volcanic geysers that are scattered around the park. Continue to Yehliu, on the coast to the north of the park, famous for its extraordinary rock formations created by the millennia of powerful north coast waves crashing into the limestone rocks.
This afternoon, you will head east along coast to Jiufen. Jiufen and the neighbouring village of Jinguashi are two other interesting stops on a tour of northern Taiwan. Once the centre of the Islands gold mining industry, these villages are now relics of a former time. The old town of Jiufen is decorated by old tea houses and traditional Japanese houses and feels untouched by the recent modernisation that has taken hold on other parts of the island. Have a cup of tea in one of the old tea houses before heading back to your hotel in Taipei in the late afternoon.

Road journey to the Taroko National Park: This morning you will be met at your hotel by your driver and driven south from Taipei to the Taroko National Park.
Guided tour of Taroko National Park: On arrival, you will be taken on a tour of Taroko National Park, visiting the magnificent Gorge Gateway, the Eternal Spring Shrine, the Swallow Grotto, the Tunnel of Nine Turns and Tienhsiang before being taken to your hotel to relax for the evening. Dinner is included at your hotel this evening.
If you would like to incorporate some walking into today's itinerary, then please talk to your driver and discuss suitable walking trails within the national park that might be appropriate.

Morning Trek: If you wish this morning, you can do some trekking or further sightseeing in the Taroko National Park. Please discuss what you would like to do with your driver on the day.
Road journey to Taitung: This afternoon you will be driven from the Taroko National Park to your hotel near Chenggong, in the heart of Taitung County. There is plenty to see en-route as you drive south along the rugged coastline and your driver will be able to suggest some interesting stop-offs. You will arrive at your hotel in the late afternoon.

Road journey to Kenting: This morning, you will be driven south to Kenting with sightseeing en route at the National Museum of Marine Biology, Eluanbi Light House and Kenting Forest Park. Including stops, this is a journey of approximately 6 hours. On arrival, check into your hotel
Evening Night Market: This evening your guide will take you to the lively Kenting Night Market located on the main street in the town of Kenting. Here you can visit the local souvenir stands and enjoy a delicious local dinner from the food stalls which serve a wide variety of meats, grilled seafood and other local delicacies (food payable locally).

Road journey to Fo Guang Shan Monastery: After some time at leisure this morning your driver will take you north from Kenting to the famous Fo Guang Shan Monastery. Arrive at the monastery in the mid-afternoon and check into your simple accommodation, where a simple vegetarian dinner will be provided for you tonight. After checking-in, you will be shown around the monastery by a resident monk or nun.

Optional morning chanting: This morning, you have the option of joining the monks for their morning prayers and chanting which takes place every day at around 5.30am.
Road journey to Tainan: After breakfast, you will be driven to Tainan, a journey of around 3 hours.
Guided tour of Tainan: On arrival, you will be taken on a tour of Tainan. First you will be taken to visit the Chinese styled Chihkan Towers, built during the Qing dynasty on the site of the former 17th Century Dutch fortress, Proventia, nowadays known as Chihkan Towers. Next, visit Kung Miao, the oldest Confucius Temple in Taiwan and the first educational institution on the island. Built almost 400 years ago, the temple has been restored a number of times, but still maintains its traditional style of architecture. Conclude your city tour with a visit to the 17th Century Fort Anping, also known as Fort Zeelandia, the first Dutch fortress built on the island. After your tour, check-in to your hotel and relax for the rest of the day.

Road journey to Alishan: After breakfast you will be driven into the hills to Alishan, a journey of around 3 hours with some interesting sights along the way.
Afternoon around Alishan: After checking into your hotel, the rest of the day is free to explore on foot. There are some great walking trails to take advantage of in the local area and your driver and hotel will be able to advise on these locally. Alternatively your driver remains at your disposal should you wish to explore more of the local area by car.

Optional Sunrise: This morning, you have the option of an early start to go and see the sunrise from the top of the nearby Mt Zhushan or Mt Tatajia. It is about an hour hike up the Zhushan Sunrise Trail or you can take the mountain railway which takes about 25 minutes. This tour can be discussed with your guide on arrival in Alishan.
Road journey to Sun Moon Lake: Later this morning, you will be drive north to Sun Moon Lake, a journey of around 3 hours.

Explore Sun Moon Lake: Today your guide will take you to see some of the interesting sights around this magical lake. These include the Wenwu Temple, the Tehua Village, the Hold Monk Shrine and the Tse -En Pagoda. You may like to rent bicycles and cycle around the lake or explore some of the beautiful surrounding hills on foot. (Bicycle hire is payable locally, but your driver can help to arrange this).

Road journey to Taichung: This morning, you will be driven to the Taichung High Speed Rail Station, about a 2 hour drive away. On arrival, your driver will help you to check-in for your train to Taipei.
Train Journey: Say goodbye to your driver at the railway station and head back to Taipei, a journey of approximately 1 hour by high speed train.
Private transfer: On arrival in Taipei, you will be met off your train and transferred to your hotel to check-in and spend the rest of the day at leisure.
