Taitung & the East Coast
Taitung is the third largest county in Taiwan and occupies a marvellous stretch of rugged coastline on the south-east of the island. Relatively sparsely populated, it is one of the best places to learn about the island’s aboriginal culture and contains some beautiful scenery. Particularly recommended when in Taitung is a visit to the Hot Spring Resort town of Chihpen; exploring the East Rift Valley; and a drive up or down the coast between Taitung and Hualien (the gateway to the Taroko National Park). The coastal drive is incredibly scenic with plenty of interesting stops to break up the journey. Taitung is also the gateway to two of Taiwan’s most interesting islands, Green Island and Orchid Island. Both are accessible from Taitung city by flight or by ferry.
