A Swiss backed NGO has set up a project to help the villagers by constructing 11 buildings with expansive roofs to collect and channel rainwater into specially designed tanks so locals can have access to water year round. The gradient of the path then increases slightly as you enter the rainforest for the hot and humid trek up to the first post at 1,500m, by which point you will have been going for 2 hours. After a break the path continues through dense jungle, passing by several species of monkeys and towering trees for a further 2 hours to the second post where you stop at the second post at 2,000m for a well earned lunch of fried noodles prepared by your guide and porter and a hot mug of tea.
From the second base the gradient becomes even more challenging for until reaching the "extra post" for the next break. After this resting point, the path levels out for a while as the trees start accumulating lichen before giving way to shrubs, as the flora constantly changes as you approach the tree line. Once above the tree line, on a clear day you are rewarded with fantastic views of the canopy beneath, and all the way to Lombok's northern coastline. After several more steep sections you reach post number 3 which takes around 2 hours from the lunch stop. From post 3 the final section of the trek is an energy sapping 2 hours of clambering over volcanic boulders and up steep dirt paths until reaching the camp site located on the lip of the crater at an altitude of 2,641m. The setting for your overnight stay overlooks a mesmeric landscape of the bright greens and blues of the mineral rich lake water, a smoldering baby volcano, the summit of mount Rinjani and a coliseum of peaks. After setting up camp (tent, inflatable mattress and sleeping bag) your guides prepare tea and a hot meal, allowing an early sleep in preparation for waking before sunrise.
Please note that this is a demanding trek with minimal levels of comfort which requires good levels of fitness and strength. A day trip to Mount Rinjani is available as an alternative to this trek - please ask for more information.
