Overnight Mount Rinjani trek
This overnight trek begin at 601 meters above sea level with a gentle 45 minute walk through banana plantations and small holdings, later becoming steeper and more challenging as you pass through rainforest and dense jungle, stopping at the 2000m for lunch. From the second base the gradient becomes even more challenging, the flora constantly changing as you approach the tree line. Once above the tree line, on a clear day you are rewarded with fantastic views of the canopy beneath, and all the way to Lombok's northern coastline. By the end of the day you will have ascended to the lip of the crater, at an altitude of 2641m.
The setting for your overnight stay overlooks a mesmeric landscape of the bright greens and blues of the mineral rich lake water, a smouldering baby volcano, the summit of Mount Rinjani and a coliseum of peaks. After setting up camp (tent, inflatable mattress and sleeping bag) your guides prepare tea and a hot meal, allowing an early sleep in preparation for waking before sunrise.
Wake up is around 5am this morning for the unforgettable moment of seeing the sun rise over the peak of Mount Rinjani, and filling the Crater Lake with light. After a breakfast of banana pancakes and coffee is served by guide and porter start the descent back to the trekking centre, a 6-7 hour trek with stops. The first hour is magical as you traverse the barren upper slopes with panoramic views of Lombok's coast and the Gili Islands.
Please note that this is a demanding trek with minimal levels of comfort which requires good levels of fitness and strength. The trekking route is rough and extremely steep in places, and can get slippery when wet. Sturdy, grippy shoes with good ankle support, plenty of warm clothes and a headtorch are essential. A day trip to Mount Rinjani is available as an alternative to this trek – please ask for more information.
