Explore Mount Aso

Deep in the interior of Kyushu lies Mount Aso, an area of stunning scenery and a slower, more traditional take on Japanese life. There are many farming villages within the area’s calderas and Mount Aso's ranks amongst the world's largest, with a diameter of up to 25km and a circumference of over 100km. The area has several highlights which are worth visiting: the beautiful cone shaped Komezuka has a number of pleasant walking trails in its vicinity; a pleasant boat trip can be arranged through the Takachiho, a narrow gorge made by the Gokase River; or you may choose to simply relax in one of the area’s natural hot springs. The more adventurous may like to ascend the active volcanic peak of Nakadake on foot or by ropeway to peer down through the sulphurous clouds at its spectacular crater.
