Nek Chand's Rock Garden

Nek Chand’s Rock Garden is the legacy of one man’s imagination to turn discarded junk into works of art. Nek Chand was a former government official who started building a garden secretly in his spare time. He kept it hidden from the government authorities for 18 years, up until 1975, by which point it had grown to a 12-acre complex of interlinked causeways, running canals and waterfalls, landscaped with pottery and sculptures of dancers, animals and musicians. The garden is now known as the Rock Garden of Chandigarh. Since its inauguration as a public space in 1976, it has attracted over 12 million visitors. This unique garden makes a great place to break up the journey between Chandigarh airport and Shimla.
