Marvel at Registan Square

Located right in the heart of Samarkand, the breathtaking Registan Square is not just Uzbekistan’s most iconic sight, but one of the most impressive single sights in all of Central Asia. The word Registan means ‘sandy place’, and this was once the main public square and marketplace of the city where the locals would gather to hear royal proclamations, witness public executions, and exchange goods. The square is framed on three sides by tall madrassahs, boasting some of the most impressive Islamic architecture to be seen any where in the world. Registan Square is spectacularly lit up at night, so it’s well worth making a return visit after dark.
