Ride the Tashkent Metro

Tashkent is home to the first metro system in Central Asia. Construction began after the devastating earthquake of 1966 and the first line was opened in 1977. This is no ordinary metro system however, it is arguably one of the most unique and impressive anywhere in the world. Each of the 48 stations has its own unique architectural theme, some based around Islamic and Central Asian motifs, and some with Soviet Art and history. The stations are all beautifully decorated using material such as glass, marble, and ceramic tiles, and many are original works of art in their own right. Even if you don’t actually need to go anywhere, just hop on the metro for a few stops and marvel at the craftsmanship.
