Train ride across the Gokteik Viaduct

The train line linking Pyin Oo Lwin with Lashio used to be the infamous black-market train which, in the past, transported goods to and from China. The line takes you through charming scenery and the train crosses the famous 700m long Gokteik Viaduct, built in 1900 by the American Pennsylvania Steel Co. The Goteik Viaduct remains Myanmar’s highest bridge and is a true feat of engineering. The slow trundle over is highly enjoyable, although best to avoid looking down if you suffer from vertigo. The impressive height, around 100 metres high, of the bridge provides a stunning vantage point to appreciate the surrounding scenery. Facilities on board the train are poor, and the seats will not be as comfortable as expected on western trains, so we recommend only doing the short journey over the viaduct.
